K-pop sensation NewJeans is set to headline the opening ceremony of the 2023 League of Legends (LoL) World Championship finals, according to an announcement by Riot Games and ADOR, the group's agency.
This year's LoL World Championship will culminate with its finals held at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Guro District, Seoul, on November 19. It marks the third time the event has been hosted in Korea, previously in 2014 and 2018.
The championship is a grand spectacle in the world of esports, with the finals streamed online to a massive audience of 74 million viewers in 2021.
For this year's event, NewJeans will perform "GODS," the 10th official theme song for the LoL World Championship, which was released on October 4. The song has achieved remarkable success, maintaining a presence on the U.S. Billboard Global Chart for three consecutive weeks.
In previous LoL World Championship finals, renowned artists like Imagine Dragons and Lil Nas X have graced the opening stage. NewJeans is set to make history as the first K-pop group to headline the championship's opening ceremony.
NewJeans, consisting of members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein, swiftly rose to stardom under the creative direction of Min Hee-jin, who played a pivotal role in the success of K-pop stars such as f(x) and EXO during her time at SM Entertainment. The group is known for chart-topping hits like "Hype Boy" and "ETA."
