South Korea's ONE AND J. Gallery is participating in Art Basel Hong Kong 2023.
ONE AND J. is a famous gallery in Korea that has been devoted to introducing Korean art overseas since 2005.
The 11 artists representing Korea selected by ONE AND J. Gallery who participated in the main section part selected works such as Suyoung Kim (painting), Dongwook Suh (painting), Yunho Kim (photography), Seung Yul Oh (sculpture, installation), Sunmin Park (new media), and Soyoung Chung (sculpture).
Suyoung Kim has long painted the exteriors of modernist buildings. This is a major methodology and aesthetic practice of Kim's work, as the surface of the canvas, divided, reveals the abstraction inherent in our world that begins with the "architectural moment".
Dongwook Suh's paintings reveal that human emotions cannot be easily explained by a single adjective, and that the personality of a person cannot be generalized into a single sentence. In particular, the concept of "atmosphere" describes the artist's emphasis on the complexity of the painterly expression, rather than the depicted subject matter.
Yunho Kim's work is based on photography and reveals theatricality and stage effects. The highly clear and beautifully depicted natural scenery reflects the fact that the nature we encounter through photography is actually a theatrical stage, and the lighting equipment serves as a device that questions the "captured" aspect of photography.
Seung Yul Oh works in both New Zealand and Korea. The smooth surfaces, materials, and forms of his works are rooted in his multiple identities, and he connects and expands his polysemic perspectives that originate from his own narrative in his artistic practice.
