(SEOUL- SayArt) The solo exhibition of Choi Sungchul, renowned as the “Color Sculptor,” is anticipated to captivate viewers at Korea's Khalifa Gallery, well-known for its curation of exceptional artists.
This exhibition will be hosted at the Khalifa gallery, under the direction of Sohn Kyong-Lan, which specializes in showcasing exceptional artists and promoting their work both domestically and internationally.
The exhibition is titled "IN THE PLAZA" and will be open from October 24 to November 12, 2023.
Choi has pursued a distinctive art technique known as 'color sculpture,' which involves adding color to artworks to depart from the aesthetics of traditional sculpture. He pursues a break with “Erkenntnistheorie” in his works. He integrates diverse colors and patterned images into his sculptures to infuse them with a highly intellectual rationale. As a result, his work is occasionally referred to as a distinctive piece that fuses elements of both painting and sculpture. Experts describe Choi's work as aligning with Existentialism, which posits that "existence precedes essence(l'existence précède l'essence, Jean-Paul Sartre)". After completing his studies in sculpture at INHA University and its Graduate school, he earned his degree from the sculpture department at the 'Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara' in Italy.
Since then, he has hosted numerous solo exhibitions both in his home country and abroad, including in Italy, Germany, and Korea. He showcased his talent by taking part in international art events like the 'Korea-China Sculptors International Exchange Exhibition' in Xiamen, China, 'Art Hampton' in New York, USA, 'BASEL SCOPE ART FAIR' in Basel, Switzerland, and the 'Pyeongchang Biennale' in Korea, establishing himself on a global stage.
His artworks are in the possession of various institutions, including the Minucciano Municipal Museum , Udine City Hall, Carrara City Hall, and Fordungian City Hall in Italy, as well as Ibague City Hall in Colombia. And the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art holds his pieces In Korea.
