With a career spanning several decades, HWANG Gyutae, born in 1938 in Korea, has gained recognition for his unconventional approach to photography. In his latest works, he reinterprets old black and white photos from the 1960s by using Photoshop to enlarge them, creating a pixelated effect reminiscent of his earlier 'Pixel' series, which captured images from TV screens and other sources.

One of the defining features of HWANG Gyutae's work is his bold use of cropping and blow-up techniques. Inspired by the 1966 film "Blowup" by Michelangelo Antonioni, in which a photographer discovers a murder while zooming in on a photo in a dark room, HWANG Gyutae aims to capture unexpected images that emerge when photos are enlarged. His innovative approach challenges the traditional notions of scale and perspective in photography, creating a unique visual experience for viewers.

Arario Gallery, which was founded in 1989 and has since expanded to multiple locations in Asia and the United States, is known for its commitment to promoting Asian artists internationally and showcasing experimental art from Asia to a global audience. The gallery's participation in the prestigious Galleries Art Fair 2023 underscores its role as a leading gallery in the contemporary art scene in Asia.
