The Städel Museum in Frankfurt proudly presents "sunrise. east.," a solo exhibition featuring the captivating works of Swiss contemporary artist Ugo Rondinone. From June 28, 2023, visitors to the museum can immerse themselves in a visual feast of large-scale silver aluminum sculptural heads, adorning the Städel garden with their simple yet expressive facial features.
Ugo Rondinone has long embraced the philosophy of "art for all," exhibiting his works in various public spaces worldwide since the 1990s. In line with this ethos, the exhibition at Städel Museum aims to engage a diverse audience, transcending barriers and inviting viewers of all backgrounds to connect with the art. The sculptures radiate a friendly and humorous aura, with their small eyes and wide-open mouths. These whimsical forms evoke a plethora of associations, from archaic totems and ritual masks to ethereal ghosts, alluding to the visual language of comics and emoticons. Through their evocative presence, Rondinone delves into the intricate realm of human emotions, inviting contemplation and introspection.
The exhibition consists of a twelve-part series of sculptures, each named after a specific month of the year, spanning from "sunrise. east. january" to "sunrise. east. december." Drawing inspiration from the artist's personal experiences and his profound exploration of time, these sculptures encapsulate both individual and universal aspects of temporality. Arranged in a circular formation, with the heads facing one another, the sculptures symbolize the cyclical nature of the passage of time. As viewers wander amidst this unique landscape within the museum's garden, they become participants in the transformative power of Rondinone's art. The silvery hue of the sculptures, reminiscent of morning dew, dances in the play of light, infusing the surroundings with a sense of enchantment.
"sunrise. east." invites visitors to embark on a sensory journey, delving into the depths of human emotions and the perpetual cycle of time. Ugo Rondinone's sculptures create a space for introspection and connection, transcending barriers and illuminating the profound beauty of our shared human experience. The exhibition runs through November 5, inviting art enthusiasts and curious minds to explore the inner world of emotions through Rondinone's mesmerizing sculptural heads.
