Art Center White Block in Paju is currently hosting a thought-provoking group exhibition titled 'Ah! East Asian Painting: Already · Always · Change,' which marks the second installment of the four-part series dedicated to presenting the distinct artistic realms of contemporary artists reimagining the traditions of East Asian painting. Through a collection of artworks and insightful interviews, the exhibition seeks to delve into the evolution and current state of the genre within the context of modern art.
One of the featured artists in this exhibition is Yoo Geun-Taek, renowned for his profound exploration of the profound essence concealed beneath the surface of mundane existence. Employing traditional materials such as hanji (traditional Korean paper), ink, and oyster shell powder, Yoo Geun-Taek captures the weightiness of the ordinary. Notable works on display include "Dialogue" (2022), "Growth and Development – Me" (2020), and "Standing at the Edge" (2018), which showcase the artist's mastery of his craft. Additionally, the exhibition presents Yoo Geun-Taek's creations from his 2019 Berlin residency, including "Self-portrait in Wedding" and "Berlin Landscape," offering a glimpse into the artist's explorations beyond his usual artistic milieu.
Running until October 9th, 'Ah! East Asian Painting: Already · Always · Change' invites visitors to immerse themselves in the captivating world of contemporary interpretations of East Asian painting. By bridging the gap between tradition and innovation, the exhibition invites contemplation on the evolving nature of the genre within the dynamic landscape of contemporary art. As Yoo Geun-Taek's works intertwine tradition and modernity, viewers are invited to embark on a journey that unveils the transformative power of artistic expression.
