Bek Hyun-jin named Jeonju International Film Festival's programmer of the year and selects seven films for the special section "J Special: Programmer of the Year," including Luis Bunuel's late trilogy.

JEONJU ― Bek Hyun-jin, a versatile artist who is best known for his role as a villain in the 2021 hit SBS drama "Taxi Driver," has been selected as the programmer of the special section "J Special: Programmer of the Year" at this year's Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF). Bek, who is also an accomplished musician and director, has selected seven films for the festival, including three films from Spanish director Luis Bunuel's late trilogy.

Bek, who held his first solo exhibition in 1996 and is part of the first generation of indie musicians in Korea, said during a press conference on Friday that he finally accepted himself as an actor two or three years ago after starring in the 2020 film "Samjin Company English Class." He also revealed that he never took an audition because he hates competitions and was lucky to receive opportunities.

For the JIFF special section, Bek selected the late trilogy of Spanish director Luis Bunuel, two films he starred in ("Gyeongju" and "Popee"), and two shorts he directed ("Endless Joke" and "The End"). Bek said that he chose Bunuel's films because he still checks them out sometimes and thinks it would be nice to watch them on the big screen in theaters.

He also explained that he selected "Gyeongju" and "Popee" from his own films because he thinks few people have seen them in theaters. Although he has worked with master directors such as Park Chan-wook, Hong Sang-soo, Im Sang-soo, and Ryoo Seung-wan, Bek wanted to show films that are lesser known.

Bek also stated that he plans to make another video or short film about death or end-of-life experiences to complete "The End" trilogy. When asked about his multitasking, Bek attributed his ability to do many things at once to his insatiable curiosity, adding that he doesn't try to do anything in particular.

The Jeonju International Film Festival will run from April 28 to May 7.
