Following a successful premiere last year, Frieze Film is back in Seoul in 2023, promising a captivating display of works that challenge conventional narratives. This year, visitors are also invited to journey through the city's independent art venues.
This year's edition, under the guidance of curators KIM Sung woo and Sungah Serena CHOO, is intriguingly titled ‘It was the way of walking through narrative’. The program delves into the concept of film narrative as a means of unearthing hidden stories. This artistic 'archaeology' seeks to expose narratives brushed aside by history or manipulated in modern media, shedding light on the subtexts of daily life, often veering into the realms of fantasy and alternate dimensions.
The 2023 lineup boasts works from fourteen distinguished artists, including AN Jungju, BAEK Heaven, Omyo CHO, and HAN Uri, to name a few. Their masterpieces will grace four prominent independent venues: Amado Art Space, BOAN1942 ARTSPACE BOAN 1, Insa Art Space, and MOTHER Offline. The artworks, while physically separate, are interconnected in their narratives.
These works promise to transport the audience through a maze of time and space, breaking apart and reassembling memories and experiences, offering fresh tales and viewpoints. Frieze Film this year is set to redefine cinematic storytelling in the art world, inviting audiences to perceive new dimensions in their surroundings.
From August 22 to September 9, art enthusiasts can experience these installations at the aforementioned venues or explore them digitally on frieze.com. The distribution of artists across the venues is as follows: Amado Art Space features the works of KWAK So Jin, PARK Sunmin, PYO Minhong, and HONG LEE Hyun-Sook. BOAN1942 ARTSPACE BOAN 1 will host pieces by KIM Daum, Moojin Brothers, LEE Eunhee, and HAN Uri. Insa Art Space will display the creativity of KIM Hyojae, AN Jungju, and Omyo CHO, while MOTHER Offline will showcase NAM Hwayeon, BAEK Heaven, and JUN Sojung.
