A video tribute to notable veterans of the 1950-53 Korean War will be displayed periodically on two electronic billboards in Times Square this week, as the United States and South Korea mark the 70th anniversary of their alliance. The 30-second video will run from 12 a.m. Thursday through May 3.
The Veterans Ministry announced that the video will honor American veterans including General Douglas MacArthur, who commanded UN forces during the war; Air Force Colonel Dean Elmer Hess, who led a rescue mission of war orphans in Seoul; Army Colonel Ralph Puckett Jr.; and Korean American Army Colonel Kim Young-oak.
The video will also pay tribute to two U.S. father-son pairs: General James Alward Van Fleet and his son, Air Force Captain James Alward Van Fleet Jr., who went missing after a bombing mission; and military chaplain William Earn Shaw and his son, Navy Lieutenant William Hamilton Shaw, who died during a mission in Seoul.
Korean war heroes to be featured in the video include General Paik Sun-yup, commander of the 1st Division, and Air Force General Kim Doo-man, the first Korean pilot to achieve 100 sorties, as well as Army Colonel Kim Dong-seok and Marine Corps Colonel Park Jung-mo, both of whom participated in operations to retake Seoul.
The selection of veterans was made by the Veterans Ministry and the ROK-US Combined Forces Command. "We hope this video tribute will remind Americans and Koreans alike of the sacrifices made by our veterans and the enduring strength of our alliance," a spokesperson for the Veterans Ministry said.
