Netflix's latest original series, "Queenmaker," released on April 14, has quickly become the most-watched non-English TV show on the platform. According to Netflix, the show garnered over 15 million total hours viewed in just three days, making it the most popular non-English show for the week of April 10. "Queenmaker" ranked No. 1 in Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam, and landed in the Top 10 in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Qatar, and Singapore.
The plot of "Queenmaker" revolves around Hwang Do-hee, a corporate fixer who becomes disillusioned with the ethics of her work and teams up with a human rights lawyer, Oh Seung-sook, to take down her former employers. The show features veteran actors Kim Hee-ae, known for her roles in hit dramas such as "My Husband’s Woman" (2007) and "The World of the Married" (2020), and Moon So-ri, who plays Oh Kyung-sook, the lawyer who helps Hwang Do-hee enter the political scene.
"Queenmaker" has received positive reviews and currently has a rating of 7.8 out of 10 on IMDb. This success is part of Netflix's push to provide more Korean content, with the streaming giant announcing a record number of upcoming Korean films and original series earlier this year. According to Netflix, over 60 percent of its users watched at least one piece of Korean content in 2022, highlighting the growing popularity of Korean dramas and films on the platform.
