BAE TAE JU paints “trauma” on canvas. The reason is that he thinks everyone has trauma.
Therefore, in his works, he depicts essential things related to issues, events, and thoughts that members of society should sympathize with and ponder, as well as individual daily life or inner life.
His works give healing time not only to the artist himself but also to the audience. This may be the reason and purpose of drawing “Trauma” in his work.
His trauma series premiered in 2015. The works at the time were the “Surgical Needle Wounds(수술 바늘에 걸린 상처)” series.
There is a mouth in the wound. The wound takes the shape of a mouth. The trauma in his work is a wound. If there is a wound, it must be sutured. The red lips symbolizing desire are tightly closed. The wound that stopped during surgery on both sides is open and waiting for sutures. The lips of desire seem to be about to say something, but Everone can even feel the fear.
he main character wearing red lipstick arouses curiosity in the observer whether he is hurt or hurting. In fact, there is an observer inside the lip-shaped wound. The mouth is the organ through which the desire to eat, drink and speak is aroused and expelled. The observer looks at us with blue eyes as if he knows everything.
He said that “trauma” is an important topic that needs to be studied in depth. In particular, he says that the traumas experienced by individuals are not different in terms of the essential aspects of social issues such as the 5·18 and the Sewol ferry disaster.
“I start my day by posting the nature I met through early morning or morning walks in the busy life of the city. I think throwing away prejudices about the seasons is also an enlightenment. Winter should not be understood simply as a cold season. A tree that loses all its leaves in winter is actually a whole tree without any pretense. Nature always evokes great emotions in me," he said.
He is working through his own trauma through his paintings. All of his works in the exhibition are based on the theme of “trauma,” but they are abstract works with a strong matière.
