The Seoul Metropolitan Traditional Orchestra is presenting the second stage of its 2023 Mixed Orchestra series on December 7 at the Sejong Grand Theater, aiming to break traditional boundaries by merging Korean traditional instruments with various genres, particularly focusing on electronic music.
The concert will be led by the trio band Modular Seoul, featuring the use of the modular synth, an electronic musical instrument known for synthesizing sounds.
Noteworthy premieres include "Wind of Sound" by drummer and percussionist Han Woong-won, a composition for drums and a Korean traditional orchestra. Singer Sunwoo Jeong-a will perform "Loom-ga," incorporating jazz vocal improvisation known as "scat." Hwang Ho-jun's composition "Dystopia" explores dissonant sound effects, encouraging reflection on the sustainability of civilization. "Four Fields" by Park Seung-won seeks a harmonious balance between traditional and electronic music, representing the ebb and flow of the four seasons with repetitive melody and rhythm.
The program also includes compositions premiered last year, such as "Sujecheon Recompose," a blend of Korean court music with Western instruments and electronic music, and the electric guitar concerto "Neungge."
