South Korea’s first ever joint exhibition of Francis Bacon and Adrian Ghenie

Christie’s, an international art auction house, is going to come to Seoul.
The first joint exhibition of Francis Bacon and Adrian Ghenie, ‘Flesh and Soul: Bacon/Ghenie’, organized by Christie’s, will be exhibited in Seoul this September.
Christie's collaborated with HomeArt to present this exhibition.‘Flesh and Soul: Bacon/Ghenie’ will be held at BOONTHESHOP located in Cheongdam from the 3rd to the 5th of September.

The president of Christie’s Asia Pacific division, Francis Belin said “Korea is a very influential country in the global art market and this view is shared by many including Christie’s. The burgeoning collector community in Korea has become an essential key power for a few years” and predicted that the exhibition will be a big success

Francis Bacon was born in Ireland in 1909. He is one of the most prominent British expressionist artists of the 20th century. He is famous for his unique art style that expresses humans’ isolation, fear and pain. In particular, the triptych ‘Three Studies of Lucian Freud (1969)’ is recorded as the most expensive artwork ever sold at the New York Christie’s auction for about 142 million dollars in 2013 after he died.

Based in Berlin, Adrian Ghenie is a Romanian artist. He is a leading contemporary artist who has (with) a similar outlook and painting style to Bacon. Although the distorted image of the characters, the rough expression of the paint, and the overwhelming scale of the work are similar to Francis Bacon, he is famous for abstracting the tragedies and trauma revealed in history. His signature works include "The Collector 4" (2009), "Pie Flight Study 2" (2008), "Lidless Eyes (2015)", and etc.

 

The work of the two iconic artists gives visitors a dark feeling and fills them with an uncomfortable tension, while also providing fascinating beauty. Christie’s said that this is an important factor in the success of the two masters.
