Music director Gray from the Netflix original film, “Ballerina” (Netflix)
Several well-known musicians have partnered with established and emerging filmmakers to infuse their films with distinctive soundscapes and enhance their cinematic appeal.
Rapper-composer Gray recently served as the music director for the Netflix original film "Ballerina," marking his debut as a film composer. The movie, released on October 6, garnered global attention for its hip-hop score, which perfectly complemented the protagonist Ok-joo's (Jun Jong-seo) action sequences. "Ballerina" narrates the tale of Ok-joo's ruthless quest for vengeance on behalf of her friend, the titular ballerina Min-hee (Park Yu-rim), with Kim Ji-hoon from "Money Heist: Korea -- Joint Economic Area" portraying Choi Pro, a gang member targeted by Ok-joo. Director Lee Chung-hyeon revealed that Gray's music played a pivotal role in capturing the film's unique style, and the collaboration contributed a contemporary touch to the project. "Ballerina" currently leads Netflix's global top 10 non-English films list in 89 countries.
Singer Chang Ki-ha recently assumed the role of music director for director Ryoo Seung-wan's blockbuster "Smugglers." The film, which hit Korean theaters on July 26, revolves around female divers, known as "haenyeo," who become embroiled in illegal smuggling to make ends meet. Chang earned praise for reinterpreting old folk music to create a retro atmosphere, transporting audiences to the 1970s setting of the film.
Oh Hyuk, leader of the band Hyukoh, composed the music for the upcoming film "The Dream Songs," directed by actor and rookie filmmaker Cho Hyun-chul. The movie tells the story of two young girls navigating their feelings for each other. Oh Hyuk and Cho previously collaborated on Cho's independent film, "Rustle," where their creative synergy led to effective and emotive soundtracks.
These collaborations between musicians and filmmakers aim to create unique atmospheres and elevate the dramatic elements in the films, providing audiences with memorable cinematic experiences.
