Movie theaters are showcasing an exciting lineup of new releases this week, featuring a diverse mix of Korean psychological thrillers, a highly anticipated horror sequel, and an action-packed anime film. The selection offers audiences everything from mystery investigations to supernatural scares and epic battles.
Leading the Korean releases is "The Ugly," a mystery thriller that opened on September 11 under the direction of Yeon Sang-ho. The film follows a documentary producer played by Han Ji-hyeon who teams up with a blind craftsman's son, portrayed by Park Jeong-min, to investigate the decades-old disappearance of his mother, played by Shin Hyun-been. As their investigation unfolds, they uncover disturbing truths about the craftsman, played by Kwon Hae-hyo, while exposing deep-seated prejudices within society.
Another Korean thriller, "Murder Report," began its theatrical run on September 5 under director Cho Young-jun's guidance. The film stars Cho Yeo-jeong as a reporter who conducts an interview with a serial killer played by Jung Sung-il. The tension escalates when she discovers that ending the interview prematurely would result in another victim's death, creating a deadly psychological game between journalist and killer.
Horror fans can experience "The Conjuring: Last Rites," which opened on September 3 and marks the final installment of the popular supernatural franchise. Directed by Michael Chaves, the film brings back Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. In this concluding chapter, the Warrens confront their most challenging case yet, involving a family terrorized by haunting supernatural forces.
Rounding out the week's releases is "Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle," a Japanese action-fantasy anime that has been playing since August 22. Directed by Haruo Sotozaki, this film represents the first installment of a climactic trilogy. The story centers on demon slayers who must battle formidable enemies within the fortress of the powerful demon Muzan, as protagonist Tanjiro and his companions face what may be their most dangerous challenge to date.
