Paris — The Light Factory showcases the enduring exploration of abstract painting by American artist Suzan Frecon. The exhibition emphasizes her rigorous engagement with color, composition, and light, realized through the careful mixing and application of pigments and oils.
Frecon’s works are distinguished by the interplay of matte and glossy surfaces, creating varying densities and reflective qualities that move between darkness and luminosity, figure and ground. Light emerges as a central component of her practice, a theme underscored by the exhibition’s title. Borrowed from The Light Factory, a poem by her daughter, writer Marcella Durand, the title also references a book pairing Durand’s poems with Frecon’s works on paper. Selected pieces from that publication are featured in the exhibition.
The presentation follows the recent announcement that the Museum Wiesbaden in Germany has awarded Frecon the prestigious Alexej von Jawlensky Prize. Previous recipients include Agnes Martin, Brice Marden, Ellsworth Kelly, and Richard Serra. The award will be accompanied by a solo exhibition of Frecon’s work at the museum in 2027.
Organizers note that her paintings are best experienced directly, particularly in the skylit Paris gallery where the current exhibition is installed. The Light Factory runs through October 4. Visitors are also invited to explore the dedicated exhibition page online, which provides further references on the artist.
