In the dynamic world of K-pop, Monsta X has carved a distinct niche for themselves with their explosive performances and captivating music. Often dubbed as the group that exudes a perpetual aura of anger, Monsta X embraces this label with pride, viewing it as a reflection of their unwavering passion and energy. In an exclusive interview with the Korea JoongAng Daily ahead of their latest release, the first subunit of the boy band, comprising members Shownu and Hyungwon, opens up about their thoughts on this perception.

"I like it because it's actually quite descriptive of the passion and energy that we always have," remarked Hyungwon, candidly acknowledging the group's fiery image. "I personally really like our color as Monsta X. And I know that when they say we look angry, they're not talking about us looking emotionally angry, but the energy that we convey. I really like it."

The subunit's debut EP, titled "The Unseen," unveils a more refined and chic side of Shownu and Hyungwon through five melodic dance tracks, including the lead single "Love Me A Little." According to Hyungwon, the song delves into the dichotomy between self-perception and external judgment, a theme that resonates deeply with the artists who continually face public scrutiny.

"For us, always being exposed to the public means that we can never truly be ourselves," explained Hyungwon. "But myself, in front of other people, is still me — everything is still me. In the end, I've come to the conclusion that no matter how I act or how other people see me, it's all me."

Despite their shared roles as main dancers, Shownu and Hyungwon are markedly distinct in their artistic approach. While Shownu excels in commanding performances, Hyungwon has been increasingly involved in producing his own music, showcasing his delicate and focused nature.

Working collaboratively on "The Unseen" allowed the two members to explore their differences creatively. Hyungwon crafted the music, while Shownu masterfully choreographed the performances. The lead track "Love Me A Little" was chosen through a blind vote, highlighting the song's artistic merit rather than any preferential treatment.

This EP also marks a significant moment for Shownu, as it is his first major project since completing his 21-month military service last April. The duo's synergy and musical chemistry, evident in the album's seamless execution, further demonstrate Monsta X's enduring appeal.

Throughout their nine-year journey in the industry, Monsta X has defied the "seven-year curse" that often plagues K-pop groups. With a majority of the members, including Shownu and Hyungwon, renewing their contracts with Starship Entertainment, the group continues to garner a growing fanbase both within Korea and internationally.

Monsta X's unwavering dedication to their fans, affectionately known as Monbebe, remains at the core of their journey. "We always think about what fans would want from us, and I think it all comes down to seeing more of us," Hyungwon expressed. The band takes solace in knowing their music can bring comfort and strength to those who listen.

As Monsta X's journey continues, "The Unseen" stands as a testament to their unwavering determination, proving that it is their unyielding spirit that has propelled them forward, one step at a time.
