Seoul, South Korea — In a significant development, the Yongsan Police Station revealed on the 17th that they have applied for arrest warrants for renowned singer Nam Tae-hyun (29) and broadcaster Seo Min-jae (30) on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act. The police suspect that the two individuals have been involved in the consumption of methamphetamine since August of the previous year.
The case gained public attention when Seo Min-jae posted and subsequently deleted alarming statements on his Instagram account of her last year. In these now-erased posts, he mentioned "Nam Tae-hyun's methamphetamine box" and alluded to the existence of a syringe kept in a company cabinet. Netizens quickly reported the incident to both the Gangnam and Yongsan Police Stations, prompting an investigation into the matter.
Civic groups have also accused Nam and Seo, as well as a third party believed to be their drug supplier, of violating the Narcotics Control Act. The involvement of this alleged third party has yet to be fully established, but the authorities are actively pursuing all leads related to the case.
In response to the initial reports, both Nam Tae-hyun and Seo Min-jae provided statements asserting that their Instagram posts were related to a personal disagreement and that excessive consumption of psychiatric medication due to stress led to the impulsive and inaccurate online claims. However, the police continued their investigation, collecting hair samples from both individuals and submitting them for appraisal to the National Institute of Scientific Investigation (NFS) in September of last year.
The next crucial step in the legal proceedings will be the interrogation of the suspects prior to the arrest of Nam and Seo, which is scheduled for the Seoul Western District Court at 10:30 am on the 18th. This warrant review session will play a pivotal role in determining the course of action against the two high-profile figures.
It is worth noting that Nam Tae-hyun, in addition to the current drug-related investigation, is also facing scrutiny from the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office for a separate incident involving drunk driving in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, last month. The singer's past controversies, such as the publicized love affair with singer Jang Jae-in in 2019 and the incident widely known as the 'both legs situation,' have only added to the media and public interest surrounding the current legal proceedings.
As the nation awaits further updates, the arrest warrants sought for Nam Tae-hyun and Seo Min-jae underscore the seriousness of the allegations and the need for a thorough investigation into the alleged violation of drug laws. These developments serve as a reminder that the issue of drug abuse and its consequences continues to impact individuals across different strata of society, including prominent figures in the entertainment industry.
