The Korean comedy Amazon Hwalmyungsoo, directed by Kim Chang Joo, has made a sensational debut in Vietnam, solidifying its place in the growing wave of K-cinema success. Released on November 15, the film grossed $1.2 million during its opening weekend (November 15–17), claiming the top spot at the Vietnamese box office.
This remarkable achievement marks the second-highest opening weekend for a Korean film in Vietnam, trailing only behind Pawmyo, which earned $3.02 million. It surpasses the previous runner-up, 6/45, which debuted with $1.04 million, highlighting the film’s widespread appeal and its potential to sustain the momentum of the K-movie phenomenon in Southeast Asia.
Amazon Hwalmyungsoo captured an impressive 62% market share during its debut weekend. Its fresh comedic take and unique narrative struck a chord with local audiences. The Vietnamese distributor attributed the film’s success to the on-screen chemistry of lead actors Ryu Seung Ryong and Jin Sun Kyu, as well as the dubbing performance by local star Kieu Minh Tuan, which resonated strongly with viewers.
The film’s success not only underscores the universal appeal of Korean storytelling but also highlights the growing cultural synergy between Korean cinema and Southeast Asian audiences. With its sharp humor and vibrant performances, Amazon Hwalmyungsoo showcases how localized adaptations, such as language-specific dubbing, can elevate a film’s impact in international markets.
Looking ahead, Amazon Hwalmyungsoo is set to expand its footprint across Asia. The film will premiere in Taiwan next month, followed by its release in Thailand in January 2024. This staggered rollout underscores the strategic approach of Korean distributors in targeting key international markets and leveraging the sustained popularity of K-culture globally.
Vietnam’s reception of Amazon Hwalmyungsoo is yet another testament to the country’s growing appetite for Korean cinema. As the second-largest market for Korean films in Southeast Asia, Vietnam has repeatedly shown strong support for K-movies, with recent hits like Pawmyo and 6/45 cementing their status as box office powerhouses.
The overwhelming success of Amazon Hwalmyungsoo not only reinforces the dominance of K-cinema in Vietnam but also exemplifies how cross-cultural collaborations and relatable storytelling can continue to bridge audiences across borders.
