The Historical Epic Faces Criticism for CGI Quality in Key Battle Scenes

South Korea's terrestrial broadcaster KBS launched its much-anticipated historical drama "Goryeo-Khitan War" on Saturday, marking its 34th period drama. The series depicts the reign of King Hyeongjong and the political endeavors of Gen. Gang Gam-chan to unite Goryeo against the Khitan-led Liao dynasty. Despite high expectations for the Great Battle of Guiju of 1018, some viewers expressed disappointment, particularly with the computer-generated imagery (CGI) in the war scenes. The show aims to showcase traditional period dramas and is available for streaming on platforms like Netflix and Rakuten Viki.

The director, Jeon Woo-sung, emphasized historical accuracy, relying on records for costumes, weapons, and events related to the war. Notably, 99 percent of the Great Battle of Guiju scenes were filmed using a large green screen, employing advanced technical assistance and quality CGI. Early reactions on social media platforms and online forums revealed mixed opinions. While some praised the lead and supporting actors' performances, others criticized the CGI for lacking the intensity expected in a large-scale battle. Viewers appreciated the introduction of ancient war tactics but expressed disappointment with the portrayal of extras in battle scenes.

The series, set in the Goryeo Kingdom, covers the Liao dynasty's invasions from 1010 to 1018, with a focus on the clash between Khitan army commander Xiao Paiya and Goryeo Gen. Gang Gam-chan. Despite the mixed feedback, some viewers praised the show's effort to present historical details and improve from past representations of epic battles. As of Sunday, the first episode achieved a 5.5 percent viewership rating, falling short of expectations for a terrestrial broadcaster's anticipated series debut. "Goryeo-Khitan War" is available on local platforms Wavve, Kocowa, and international streaming services Netflix and Rakuten Viki, with two episodes airing each weekend.
