22-Year-Old Awarded 20,000 Euros and Festival Opportunities

You Da-yoon, a 22-year-old violinist, clinched the second prize at the 2023 Long-Thibaud International Competition, as announced by the Kumho Cultural Foundation on Tuesday.

The competition, held in Paris, France, from Nov. 22 to 26, featured 21 violinists selected from a pre-selection round. You Da-yoon performed Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D Minor Op. 47 with Orchestre de la Garde republicaine at the final, which took place at the University of Paris II, Grand Amphitheatre on Sunday. 

▲ Courtesy of Kumho Cultural FoundationThe second prize comes with a monetary award of 20,000 euros ($22,000) and an opportunity for You Da-yoon to participate in around 10 music festivals, including the Gstaad New Year Music Festival.

The first and third prizes were awarded to Bohdan Luts from Ukraine and Koshiro Takeuchi from Japan, respectively.

You Da-yoon made his debut at the Kumho Foundation’s Young Artist Concert series in 2017. Currently studying at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin with Kolja Blacher, he previously studied at the Korea National University of Arts. As a beneficiary of the Kumho Cultural Foundation's Kumho Instrument Bank, You Da-yoon plays a violin made by G.B. Guadagnini in 1774. He is scheduled to perform in the Kumho Instrument Series on March 7 at the Kumho Concert Hall.

Founded in 1943 by pianist Marguerite Long and violinist Jacques Thibaud, the Long-Thibaud International Competition is held every two or three years, featuring disciplines such as piano, singing, and violin for musicians aged 16 to 33.
