South Korean midfielder Lee Kang-in earned recognition as one of the top 11 players of the Asian Cup 2023, a decision made by the Asian Football Confederation following the tournament's conclusion in Qatar on Saturday. The 22-year-old played a pivotal role for the South Korean national team in his debut at the Asian Cup, contributing three goals, tying for the team lead in scoring with captain Son Heung-min, and providing an assist.
The top 11 players list featured Akram Afif of Qatar, who was also the tournament's MVP and top scorer. Afif played a pivotal role in leading Qatar to a 3-1 victory over Jordan in the finals, marking the first hat trick in the competition. Other notable selections included Hassan Al-Haydos, Lucas Mendes, and Meshaal Barsham from Qatar, along with players from Jordan, Iran, Australia, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia.
Despite Lee Kang-in's individual success, the overall performance of the South Korean team faced criticism, particularly after their 2-0 loss in the semifinals. The disappointing showing has led to calls for the resignation of head coach Juergen Klinsmann, and Son Heung-min has remained vague about his future with the national squad.
However, Lee's performance has garnered approval from South Korean fans, who view him as a promising talent and the future of the national team. Currently playing for Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1, Lee made his mark early in his career, becoming the youngest South Korean soccer player to debut professionally in Europe at the age of 17. His achievements also include winning the Asian Young Footballer of the Year award in 2019, presented by the AFC to recognize the best young soccer player in the continent.
