Trend Gains Momentum Despite Concerns Over Influence on Young Fans

The K-pop industry, known for its bold fashion choices, is currently buzzing with debates surrounding the emergence of the "no-pants" look, where individuals wear micro shorts or pair briefs with tights.

Huh Yun-jin, a 22-year-old member of girl band LE SSERAFIM, recently drew attention for sporting gray briefs and black tights under a pink puffer jacket in a teaser for the group's upcoming EP, "Easy," released on YouTube on Jan. 26. (G)I-DLE and SISTAR19, along with Lisa of BLACKPINK, have also embraced this trend, with (G)I-DLE showcasing the style in their latest music video, "Super Lady," released on Jan. 29.

Despite gaining popularity, the pants-free trend is not without controversy, particularly within the K-pop universe where a significant portion of fans are teenagers. Concerns have been raised about the potential influence on young fans, with critics suggesting that this trend might commercialize sexuality under the guise of fashion innovation.

Internet users have expressed worries about teenagers imitating these styles, with some describing it as exhibitionist behavior seeking attention.

Kim Hyo-jung, an instructor at Ewha Womans University's Department of Fashion Industry, acknowledges the negative reactions, attributing them to the revealing nature of the style. However, she argues that from a philosophical and cultural standpoint, the no-pants look symbolizes confidence and women's empowerment.

Drawing parallels to past fashion revolutions, Kim notes that the pantsless trend shares a spirit of freedom with the miniskirts of the 1960s, symbolizing significant cultural shifts in their respective eras.

The history of the pantsless style can be traced back to the 1950s, evolving from tight dancewear worn by dancers to accentuate their bodies. In the 1980s, the aerobic look gained popularity, leading to a surge in the popularity of fluorescent clothing and leggings.

In 2023, the no-pants look resurfaced in fashion collections, expanding from runways to red carpets and urban streets.

While the pantsless trend continues to gain momentum, Kim believes it may take time for this style to be widely accepted and integrated into mainstream fashion. She suggests that if it evolves into a more accessible style, akin to the integration of bras into sportswear for the athleisure look, it could appeal to a broader audience in the future.
