On July 16, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey unveiled an exciting initiative, announcing the selection of eighteen contemporary artists to create original works for the upcoming Terminal 6. This terminal, with an investment of $4.2 billion, is set to welcome its first gates in 2026, with full operations expected by 2028. A dedicated committee, including representatives from the Port Authority, JFK Millennium Partners, and an independent art expert, was responsible for choosing the artists, while the nonprofit Public Art Fund curated the project.
Nicholas Baume, the artistic and executive director of the Public Art Fund, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “The walls, floors, ceilings, and volumes will be enhanced with site-specific commissions that are architecturally integrated, showcasing some of the most remarkable artists of our time.”
These eighteen artists hail from seven different countries, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of New York. Many of them are based in the city and its surroundings. Among the contributors are Nina Chanel Abney, Laure Prouvost, and Haegue Yang, who will create installations suspended from the ceiling. In addition, Nevin Aladağ, Charles Gaines, Barbara Kruger, and Sky Hopinka will produce works mounted on the walls. Others involved include Candida Alvarez, Felipe Baeza, Kerstin Brätsch, Teresita Fernández, Shara Hughes, Eddie Martinez, Kambui Olujimi, GaHee Park, Uman, Charline von Heyl, and Dyani White Hawk.
Rick Cotton, the executive director of the Port Authority, highlighted the significance of public art in enhancing the airport experience, stating, “Inspiring and regionally evocative public art is a vital component of our strategy to develop world-class airports that stand out as destinations in their own right.” He added that, similar to efforts at LaGuardia and Newark-Liberty’s Terminal A, the artistic endeavors at JFK’s new Terminal 6 aim to captivate travelers and establish a distinct sense of place that embodies New York’s unique character.
