Gallery Baton in Hannam-dong, Seoul, presents Symphony of Identity, a solo exhibition by Irish artist David O’Kane, running from January 17. Known for his mastery of light and enigmatic compositions, O’Kane invites audiences to explore the uncharted realms of identity and imagination.
At the core of this exhibition are mysterious figures partially concealed beneath flowing drapes or illuminated by fragmented light. These figures, often caught in dynamic or surreal scenarios, evoke a sense of ambiguity and otherworldliness. O’Kane's ability to manipulate light transforms his canvases into windows to an imagined world that exists between reality and illusion.
Drawing inspiration from art history, including Velázquez and Francis Bacon, O’Kane weaves complex narratives into his works. Each painting resists a singular interpretation, urging viewers to engage personally with the subjects and their stories. His use of unconventional light sources not only reveals physical forms but also suggests layers of inner life, creating a dialogue between the seen and unseen.
O’Kane’s artistic achievements reflect his unique approach. Born in 1985 in Ireland, he has studied under Neo Rauch, a pivotal figure of the New Leipzig School. O’Kane has earned accolades such as the Golden Fleece Award and has exhibited internationally. His works are part of prestigious collections, including the Busan Museum of Art in South Korea and the Kunsthalle der Sparkasse Leipzig in Germany.
Symphony of Identity showcases O’Kane’s latest exploration of human nature through dreamlike compositions. By combining technical precision with conceptual depth, the exhibition offers viewers an immersive experience that challenges perception and celebrates the complexities of identity.
