"Oppenheimer," the latest cinematic offering from acclaimed director Christopher Nolan, has captured the hearts of audiences, claiming the top spot at the local box office for a continuous five-day streak and amassing a remarkable 1.5 million ticket sales.
Universal Pictures Korea, the film's distributor, announced the significant milestone on Sunday, highlighting the impressive achievement: "'Oppenheimer' crossed the 1.5 million ticket sales threshold by 11:58 a.m. This accomplishment has surpassed the pace set by Christopher Nolan's earlier works, 'Inception' and 'The Dark Knight.'"
Premiering in theaters on August 15, "Oppenheimer" delves into the narrative of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his pivotal role in the classified Manhattan Project during World War II, which aimed to develop the atomic bomb, a technology that indelibly altered the course of history.
The film's cinematic journey commenced with an impressive 552,000 ticket sales during its opening, translating to a gross revenue of 5.76 billion won ($4.3 million). This triumphant start not only secures the title of Nolan's most successful opening but also surpasses all previous records set by his illustrious filmography. By Saturday, the film had exceeded the one-million-ticket benchmark.
Following the impressive reign of the Korean disaster blockbuster "Concrete Utopia," which dominated the box office for six consecutive days after its August 9 release, the film now occupies the second place.
"Concrete Utopia," a dystopian narrative chronicling the survival of a group in the aftermath of a massive earthquake, garnered over 2.6 million tickets sold, accumulating approximately 25.6 billion won in box office revenue.
