In a Bundesliga match at Mewa Arena in Mainz, Germany, Lee Jae-sung scored two goals within four minutes to secure a 3-0 victory for Mainz against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
Lee, starting as a winger, capitalized on a goalkeeper error to score Mainz's second goal in the 19th minute after Leandro Barreiro opened the scoring in the 12th minute. Shortly after, Lee found himself unmarked in the penalty area and calmly slotted in his second goal of the match.
This marks Lee's second double of the season, following his performance against Darmstadt 98 last month, where he also provided an assist. With these goals, Lee has now scored six goals in 28 matches during the 2023-24 Bundesliga season, nearing his all-time record of seven goals from the previous season.
Mainz's victory lifts them to 15th place on the Bundesliga table, two points clear of 16th-place Union Berlin, with one game remaining in the season.
Despite the loss, Borussia Dortmund remains in fifth place in the Bundesliga standings. Their chance of winning any domestic title this season is no longer feasible, but they have advanced to the Champions League final for the first time in 11 years after defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals.
Dortmund's pursuit of the Champions League title hinges on defeating Real Madrid in the final on June 1 at Wembley Stadium, the same venue where they lost the 2012-13 Champions League final to Bayern Munich.
Mainz's final game of the season will be against Wolfsburg, currently ranked 12th in the Bundesliga standings.
