Seoul Theaters to Host Iconic Musicals, Including "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," "Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812," and "Dear Evan Hansen"

In March 2024, the Charlotte Theater in southern Seoul will host the 14th run of the rock musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch." Originating from John Cameron Mitchell's book, the production, exploring the life of genderqueer rocker Hedwig Robinson, has garnered significant popularity in Korea since its 2005 premiere, amassing a cumulative audience of 630,000 as of 2021. 

▲ Courtesy of ShownoteFollowing a three-year hiatus, the second season of the Broadway musical "Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812," also known as "Great Comet," is scheduled to commence at the Universal Arts Center in eastern Seoul in March. Based on Leo Tolstoy's novel "War and Peace," the musical focuses on the love story of 19-year-old Natasha and Anatole, intertwining with the struggles of Pierre, the illegitimate son of a Russian aristocratic family. The production, a sung-through musical without spoken dialogue, previously premiered in Korea in 2021.

In the same month, the Chungmu Art Center in Seoul will host the Korean premiere of "Dear Evan Hansen," a Broadway musical centered around a high school student grappling with social anxiety. The production, which premiered on Broadway in 2016 and received the Best Musical Tony Award in 2017, will run until June in Seoul before heading to the southern port city of Busan.

Looking ahead to 2024, the Kwanglim Arts Center in southern Seoul will stage "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" from March to June, while the Charlotte Theater will welcome "Aladdin" in November. The latter, based on Disney's 1992 animated movie, is set to conclude its Seoul shows before heading to Busan.
