In recent months, a distinctive trend has emerged within the Korean entertainment scene, particularly among K-pop stars, characterized by a no-pants fashion aesthetic. This style, characterized by the absence of traditional bottom-covering attire, such as pants or skirts, has ignited diverse reactions within the public sphere.
Tracing its roots back to the 1950s dance attire, the no-pants trend gained prominence on various Korean online forums in 2022. The phenomenon gained international attention when model and influencer Kendall Jenner showcased a look from Bottega Veneta’s spring 2023 collection, featuring black briefs over sheer black tights. This spring, renowned fashion houses such as Acne Studio, Gucci, and Tom Ford incorporated similar designs into their collections.
(G)I-dle, in their music video for "Super Lady," and Sistar19, a subunit of the now-disbanded Sistar, also joined the trend by appearing on stage in bodysuits without pants.
Public reactions to the no-pants trend have been diverse. Some view it as a form of self-expression and freedom, while others criticize it as provocative and inappropriate. Concerns have been raised about the potential influence on teenagers, with comments urging celebrities to be mindful of their impact on impressionable audiences.
The debate extends to the perceived double standard within Korean society, where celebrities are praised for the trend abroad while facing criticism domestically. As opinions continue to diverge, the no-pants trend remains a notable phenomenon in the evolving landscape of Korean fashion and entertainment.
