Cultural Heritage Administration Initiates Outreach Effort to Highlight Korean Historical Site

Beginning next week, free tours of the Old Korean Legation Building in Washington will be open to the public as part of an initiative to raise awareness about this significant Korean historical site.

The Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) announced on Thursday that a shuttle bus service will transport participants from Washington, Virginia, and Maryland to the building on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the second week of each month from February to November. 

▲ The Old Korean Legation Building in Washington, Courtesy of Cultural Heritage AdministrationAcquired by the CHA in 2012, the legation building was transformed into a museum in 2018, marking the only overseas cultural heritage site legally owned by the agency among 30 such sites in the US.

Free tours, available from May to October, will not only focus on the Old Korean Legation Building but also include visits to other Korea-related sites in the US capital. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the Korean Embassy, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Statue of Seo Jae-pil, a Korean independence activist. Additionally, the tours will encompass an exhibition about Seo as an early Korean-American Christian in the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center. The itinerary also includes a visit to the Plays & Players Theater in Philadelphia, the site of the first "Korean Congress."

This initiative aims to promote cultural heritage awareness and provide the public with an enriching experience of Korean history within the United States.
