The Korean Cultural Centre Australia is hosting a special two-day celebration for the 579th Hangeul Day, featuring emerging Korean calligrapher Lee Jeong-hwa. The program, titled "2025 Hangeul Day Special Lecture & Workshop," will showcase the unique beauty and artistic significance of Hangeul through traditional Korean script styles and calligraphy demonstrations.

The celebration consists of two main events designed to provide deep insight into Hangeul as both language and visual art. The first event, "A Journey from Heart to Heart," is scheduled for September 25, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM AEST. This special lecture will introduce traditional Korean script styles found in historic letters, highlighting the distinctive beauty of Hangeul and the artistry of calligraphy. The evening will feature a large-scale live calligraphy performance by Lee Jeong-hwa, and all attendees will receive a handwritten calligraphy gift from the artist.

The second event, "Pouring Cosmos into the Moonlight," will take place on September 26, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM AEST. This hands-on workshop offers participants the opportunity to learn and practice various traditional Korean script styles used in letter writing. Attendees will explore the distinctive features of classic script styles including Gungseo, Panbon, and Minche, experiencing the profound beauty of Hangeul calligraphy firsthand. All workshop participants will receive a special folding fan featuring original calligraphy artwork by Lee Jeong-hwa.

Lee Jeong-hwa is a prominent young calligrapher based in South Korea, recognized for expressing inner emotions through her calligraphy work. She has gained widespread recognition for contributing calligraphy to popular television dramas such as "Mr. Sunshine," "Hotel Del Luna," and "Moon Embracing the Sun," as well as films including "The King's Letters" and "The Sound of a Flower." Her work successfully bridges traditional art with contemporary culture, making Korean calligraphy accessible to modern audiences.

The accomplished artist has performed and taught calligraphy in more than 15 countries worldwide, held various exhibitions, and published calligraphy-related books. "Calligraphy is not merely an art of black and white," Lee Jeong-hwa explains. "It is the act of capturing the light of my inner universe upon hanji paper, which resembles the gentle glow of moonlight."

Both events will be held at the Korean Cultural Centre Australia, located on the ground floor of 255 Elizabeth Street in Sydney. The programs are free but restricted to adults aged 18 and over. Interested participants must apply by 11:59 PM AEST on September 21, 2025. Only selected participants will be notified via email on September 22, 2025.

The Korean Cultural Centre emphasizes the importance of commitment from selected participants. If attendees cannot attend after their application is successful, they must notify the center at sejong@koreanculture.org.au at least 48 hours before the event so their spot can be offered to someone on the waiting list.
