Aespa, the South Korean K-pop sensation, made its much-anticipated return on Monday with a third mini-album titled "My World." The album, which marks the group's first release in 10 months, showcases a different side of aespa with bright, young energy and a departure from the powerful and intense concepts seen in their previous tracks.
At a press conference held in Seoul, aespa members shared that the album focuses on their ordinary teenage selves, rather than the fictional avatars they play in the metaverse world of Kwangya. The quartet's previous tracks followed their journey to resolve the "synk-out" problem with their metaverse avatars.
The mini-album includes six tracks, led by the dance-pop title track "Spicy," which features a strong synth base sound and dynamic beats that highlight aespa's musical strengths. The music video for "Spicy" follows a high school student theme, and Ningning, one of the group's members, joked that the main dance move involves putting a pinky finger next to the lips as if eating something spicy.
Aespa's narrative revolving around Kwangya continues with "My World," as the group returns to the "real world" after their journey in the metaverse. The album includes side tracks such as "Welcome to MY World," an alternative pop song featuring the Kwangya helper "naevis," and "Thirsty," an R&B track comparing love to a ripple of water.
The album's side track "Til We Meet Again" is a fan song with a warm acoustic guitar sound that delivers a message of unity between aespa and their fans through music. Another side track, "I'm Unhappy," a pop song with a mystical melody, sings about the search for true happiness and breaking free from the judgments of others.
Aespa has already achieved a new milestone with over 1.8 million pre-orders for "My World," surpassing their previous record of 1.6 million pre-orders for their second mini-album, "Girls." During the press conference, the group also announced that a full-length album is in the works and will feature songs that they have saved especially for it.
In June, aespa will become the first K-pop group to perform at the Governors Ball Music Festival 2023 in Queens, New York. With their latest release, aespa continues to captivate fans and expand their global reach.
