A unique residential project in Osaka's Nishitanabe district showcases an innovative approach to urban living through its distinctive sky-focused design. The 47-square-meter house, completed in 2024 by FujiwaraMuro Architects, addresses the challenge of creating an impressive living space in a densely built urban environment where large condominium buildings dominate the surrounding area.

The architects received a specific request from their client for a non-standard floor plan design that would provide exceptional views in the middle of the city. Privacy concerns from neighboring buildings were a significant consideration in the design process, as the area permits construction of large residential complexes that could potentially compromise the home's sense of openness.

The centerpiece of the design is a circular skylight that brings natural light into the center of the building while providing dramatic views of the sky above. A spiral staircase has been strategically arranged around this central skylight, creating a dynamic vertical circulation system that connects all levels of the home.

The house features a unique split-level configuration with rooms stacked in a skip-floor style that gradually ascends upward. As residents climb the spiral staircase, they encounter different living spaces arranged at various heights, creating an engaging three-dimensional living experience that maximizes the use of limited square footage.

The spiral staircase leads to the main living room, which connects to a workspace located on a mezzanine level accessible via an additional staircase. This multi-level arrangement allows for distinct functional zones while maintaining visual and physical connections throughout the home.

By connecting all floors through the central spiral staircase system, the architects have created a space that transforms the act of moving through the house into an enjoyable experience.
