Four stunning landscape paintings showcasing the natural beauty of the South Downs have been installed at Plumpton railway station in East Sussex, creating an impressive visual display for the many hikers and tourists who frequent this popular destination. The vibrant artworks, created by local artist Grant Dejonge, are now prominently displayed on the exterior of a former signal box at the station, immediately catching the attention of visitors and commuters alike.

The landscape series depicts the rolling countryside and notable landmarks that surround the Plumpton station area. Among the featured subjects are sweeping views of the characteristic rolling fields of the South Downs, the historic Cross of Lewes that commemorates the significant Battle of Lewes fought in 1264, and scenic perspectives of the well-known Plumpton Racecourse. These paintings replace earlier works that were also created by Dejonge and originally installed at the station in 2017.

The art project received financial backing through Southern Railway's Station Partners Small Grant Fund, which provided £500 to support the creation and installation of these new artworks. This funding program is designed to help improve and enhance railway stations throughout the region, making them more attractive and welcoming spaces for travelers. The project was completed through a collaborative effort between Southern Railway and Network Rail, demonstrating the commitment of both organizations to supporting local community initiatives.

Rob Whitehead, Southern Railway's community engagement manager, expressed enthusiasm about the new installation, stating that the paintings not only look fantastic but also serve to highlight some of the wonderful destinations that can be reached by train. He emphasized the company's pleasure in being able to support Grant as a station partner in bringing these stunning works to fruition, noting how well they complement the excellent gardening efforts carried out by the Friends of Plumpton Station volunteer group.

Artist Grant Dejonge shared his personal connection to the project, explaining his delight in seeing his paintings displayed at his local station where they can be appreciated by everyone passing through. He expressed that the town holds a very special place in his heart, and described sharing his artistic vision with the thousands of people who use the station as a genuine privilege. The installation represents both a celebration of local landscape beauty and a successful example of community partnership in enhancing public spaces.
