Following the conclusion of the Asian Cup weeks ago, Korean football finds itself amidst a turbulent period both on and off the field. Despite the resumption of the journey to the 2026 World Cup, recent events have left a lingering impact.
In a disappointing turn of events, Korea's recent qualifier against Thailand in Seoul ended in a 1-1 draw. This leaves the Taegeuk Warriors atop their group with seven points from three games, ahead of Thailand and China by three points, with Singapore trailing at the bottom with just one point. The top two teams from the group will advance to the final round of qualification.
Jurgen Klinsmann was dismissed following the Asian Cup, and Under-23 coach Hwang Sun-hong was appointed temporarily. However, there was little evidence of a positive impact from the coaching change in the recent match against Thailand.
Despite Son Heung-min's goal in the first half and several missed opportunities, Korea failed to secure a comfortable win against the 101st-ranked Thailand. The lackluster performance left much to be desired, disappointing the sold-out crowd of 65,000 at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.
Lee Kang-in, embroiled in controversy following the Asian Cup, is expected to start the upcoming match. The Paris Saint-Germain star's performance could be crucial in turning the tide for the team.
A victory in the upcoming match holds significance beyond securing advancement in the qualification rounds. Korea seeks to end a streak of six games without a standard 90-minute win, changing the negative narrative surrounding the team in recent months.
