"Super Mario Bros. Movie" dominates Korean box office during opening weekend, attracting over 800,000 moviegoers.

The live-action film adaptation of Nintendo's iconic video game character, "Super Mario Bros. Movie," has taken the South Korean box office by storm, surpassing its competitors during its opening weekend. According to data from the Korean Film Council, the movie attracted 800,936 moviegoers from Friday to Monday (Labor Day), bringing its total cumulative number of moviegoers to 955,438 as of Monday. It is expected to surpass one million admissions on Tuesday.

In second place at the box office was director Lee Byeong-heon's "Dream," which features popular actors Park Seo-joon and IU. The film tells the story of a group of homeless people who form a football team to compete in the Homeless World Cup and attracted 488,613 moviegoers. "John Wick: Chapter 4" came in third place with 285,703 tickets sold over the weekend and a total of 1.66 million.

Meanwhile, popular Japanese anime "Suzume" took fourth place, surpassing 5.15 million ticket sales on Monday.

With the start of "family month" in May, animated films are expected to continue their success in the box office. Several big animated adventure films will be released in theaters to cater to family audiences.

On May 4, "Crayon Shinchan the Movie: The Tornado Legend of Ninja Mononoke," the 30th film in the Crayon Shinchan series, will hit local theaters. The franchise includes a TV series that has been airing since 1992.

Additionally, the remastered version of "The Adventure of Ice Planet," a 1996 animated film featuring homegrown animated character Dooly the Little Dinosaur, will be released in theaters on May 24 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the cartoon character.

Finally, "Pokemon: Arceus to the Conquering of Space-Time" will be re-released in theaters on May 31. The film, set in the magical world of Pokemon, was originally released in 2009 and is part of the wildly popular anime franchise that has seen 24 films to date.
