SM Entertainment, the renowned K-pop powerhouse, has recently announced the debut of a fresh and innovative boy band, "Riize," slated for September. With an unconventional sound yet to be explored within the K-pop scene, the seven-piece group aims to redefine the genre of emo-pop, promising a musical journey that resonates with audiences on a global scale.
Drawing inspiration from the compound of "rise" and "realize," the group's name reflects their ambition to ascend to new heights while staying true to their dreams. Comprising of multinational members, each possessing distinct strengths and characteristics, Riize is poised to embark on a "real-time odyssey" with their unique and evocative musical style, as highlighted in a statement by the agency.
Breaking new ground in the K-pop landscape, Riize is set to become the first band to embrace the genre of "emo pop," a fusion that intertwines elements of punk rock with pop melodies, backed by deeply emotional lyrics. With a shared desire to create music that draws from their personal experiences and connects with listeners worldwide, these rookies aspire to become emotional pop artists with the ability to empathize and resonate with diverse audiences.
For SM Entertainment, Riize marks the first boy band debut in seven years since the launch of NCT, and the first novice team introduced since the success of aespa in December 2020. The group is gearing up for their debut performance at the highly anticipated SMTown Live 2023 joint label concert, where they will share the stage with esteemed acts such as aespa, Red Velvet, NCT 127, NCT Dream, WayV, Super Junior, and TVXQ.
As part of their ongoing commitment to nurturing fresh talent, SM Entertainment also plans to unveil more groups from its roster of trainees in the coming months. Among these projects is the creation of the final subunit of NCT, a globally recognized multigroup boy band brand, through the pre-debut reality show "NCT Universe: Lastart." The show will select four members from the initial 10 candidates, who will debut alongside SM Rookies' Sion and Yushi as an NCT subgroup later this year. Furthermore, the agency anticipates the introduction of a new girl group, expected to make their debut by the end of this year.
As the K-pop industry continues to evolve and embrace diverse sounds and talents, Riize's upcoming debut signals a bold step forward in the pursuit of musical innovation and global connectivity. Fans eagerly await the septet's entry onto the international stage, ready to embrace the emotional journey that awaits through their melodious offerings.
