In an unexpected turn of events, Pixar Animation Studios' "Elemental" has emerged as the most-viewed foreign film in South Korea this year, defying its less-than-stellar performance at the North American box office. As per data compiled by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), "Elemental" has captivated 5.58 million moviegoers since its release on June 14, surpassing the record previously held by the Japanese animated film "Suzume," which garnered 5.53 million admissions as of Sunday.

The film's triumphant journey didn't stop there. Just last week, "Elemental" earned the distinction of becoming the most-viewed Pixar film ever released in South Korea, overtaking the record set by "Inside Out" in 2015, which attracted 4.97 million viewers.

Set in the enchanting bayside metropolis of Elemental City, the heartwarming narrative revolves around four harmonious elements - fire, water, land, and air. At the center of the story is a tender love affair between the water element, Wade Ripple, and the fire element, Ember Lumen. Directed by Korean American filmmaker Peter Sohn, "Elemental" draws inspiration from the director's own childhood and the experiences of his parents, who immigrated to New York from South Korea.
