In the picturesque village of Sisco, Corsica, Isabelle and Jean-Paul Mattei have built a remarkable artistic partnership that spans multiple creative disciplines. The husband-and-wife duo seamlessly navigate between roles as painters, decorators, illustrators, and comic book authors, bringing their diverse talents to every project they undertake.
Their love story began twelve years ago in an art studio, a setting that would prove prophetic for their future together. Isabelle Duvignon Mattei, originally from Paris, arrived in Corsica driven by her passion for art and eager to experience the atmosphere of a painting school. A friend from Bastia recommended a certain J-P Mattei, a professor on Avenue Émile Sari, but warned her with specific advice: "Don't tell him you already paint - he's suspicious of those who already paint because they're too quick to refuse any advice."
Following this recommendation, Isabelle deliberately concealed her artistic background from the man who would become her future beloved. However, during that first class, Jean-Paul immediately noticed Isabelle's technique and artistic "eye." "He told me: 'You've painted before!' I said no, and I got scolded for it!" she recalls with hearty laughter. Despite her deception, Jean-Paul's keen instructor's eye had spotted her natural talent and previous experience.
A few months later, on July 14, 2013 - a date that Jean-Paul, a native of Prunelli-di-Fiumorbu, is careful to specify - they ceased being student and teacher and became creative partners. Their intimate workshop reflects their collaborative approach: brushes scattered on one side, canvases neatly arranged on the other. This organized chaos serves as the creative headquarters where they bring their various artistic visions to life.
The couple's versatility is evident in their wide range of projects, from playful trompe-l'oeil works to their comic book series. Each project becomes a unique creation, showcasing their ability to adapt their artistic skills to different mediums and styles. Their insatiable curiosity and multifaceted approach to art allows them to constantly explore new creative territories while maintaining their distinctive artistic voice.
Looking toward the future, Isabelle and Jean-Paul are already preparing for their next major venture: a showroom scheduled to open in 2027. This upcoming project represents another evolution in their artistic journey, providing them with a dedicated space to showcase their diverse body of work and continue their story written with two brushes.
