Seoul is set to host the awards ceremony for the 2024 edition of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, marking the first time this global culinary recognition event will take place in Korea. The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced the news in a recent release, revealing that the event is scheduled for March. More detailed information regarding dates and locations will be disclosed in December.
The prestigious awards ceremony is expected to draw the participation of approximately 800 industry leaders and experts. The event will encompass award ceremonies, gala dinners, and conferences held across the city. Kim Young-hwan, Director-General of the metropolitan government's Tourism and Sports Bureau, expressed the belief that hosting Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants in Seoul reflects the city's ongoing efforts to promote gastronomic tourism. He hopes the event will enhance Seoul's global reputation as a world-class gastronomic tourist destination.
The Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list, launched in 2013 as a spinoff of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, aims to celebrate gastronomy and serve as a guide for diners worldwide. The annual list is determined through voting by a group of approximately 300 restaurant-industry leaders across Asia with extensive knowledge and expertise in the continent's gastronomic scene. Past ceremonies have taken place in key tourist destinations such as Singapore, Bangkok, and Macao.
Considered for the award are restaurants in 26 countries across six regions, including East Asia and Southeast Asia. The countries include Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, the Maldives, Micronesia, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.
Notable Korean restaurants that made the 2023 list include Mosu in Yongsan District, Onjium in Jongno District, Mingles in Gangnam District, and Born & Bred in Seongdong District. In 2023, Bangkok's Le Du, led by chef Thitid Tassanakajohn, was crowned The Best Restaurant in Asia.
