The vibrant girl group cignature has made a spirited comeback with their latest single "Smooth Sailing," signaling their return with an upbeat melody that exudes freshness and vitality.
Comprising members Chaesol, Jeewon, Seline, Chloe, Semi, and Dohee, cignature unveiled their fourth EP, "Us in the Summer," along with the lead track "Smooth Sailing" on Tuesday. This release arrives seven months after the group's third EP, "My Little Aurora."
In an online press showcase held ahead of the album's launch, Jeewon expressed the group's mixed emotions, stating, "[My Little Aurora] was cute and bubbly. While our new album is still bubbly, we made it a lot more refreshing." Chaesol further affirmed that the album maintains a seamless continuation of cignature's distinct music style.
The EP boasts a compilation of four tracks: "Mess With My Mind," "Smooth Sailing," "Sorry So Sorry," and "Little Me." Notably, the first three tracks were crafted by renowned singer-songwriter and prolific producer Ryan Jhun. His repertoire includes an array of chart-toppers within the K-pop realm, encompassing artists like Oh My Girl, IU, Red Velvet, EXO, and SHINee. This collaboration marks cignature's first venture with the acclaimed producer.
While "Smooth Sailing" retains an essence of the group's musical identity, it also introduces an array of novel elements, starting with its accompanying music video. Shot entirely in Japan, the video captures the group in a refreshing outdoor setting, embodying an air of fun and adventure. Jeewon revealed that the experience was marked by several firsts, including mastering the art of cycling sans training wheels and taking a plunge into a swimming pool, both featured within the video.
Addressing concerns stemming from her appearance on comedian Tak Jae-hoon's YouTube channel, where inappropriate comments were made about her physique, Jeewon reassured fans and the public. She asserted the group's commitment to showcasing diverse facets beyond their musical pursuits, emphasizing her intent to safeguard the emotions of devoted fans.
Younha, a prominent singer-songwriter, shared her support during Tuesday's showcase, expressing faith in Jeewon's ability to handle the matter responsibly.
Seline encapsulated the sentiment of the group, likening their EP "Smooth Sailing" to impeccably tailored clothing, designed exclusively for them. As cignature continues to evolve, their latest release invites listeners to embark on a vibrant musical journey, reflective of their dynamic growth as artists.
