18th Annual Uijeongbu Budae Jjigae Festival Celebrates Korea's Famous Army Stew

The streets of Uijeongbu were filled with the spicy, enticing aroma of budae jjigae, Korea's famous army stew, as steaming pots simmered throughout the city during the 18th annual Uijeongbu Budae Jjigae Festival. The festival took place on Saturday afternoon along the appropriately named Uijeongbu Budae Jjigae Street, located near Uijeongbu Station in Gyeonggi Province, where the gentle autumn breeze carried the distinctive scent of the beloved dish through the rustling fallen leaves.
The festival street, lined with restaurants specializing in budae jjigae, showcased the city's deep connection to this iconic Korean dish through vibrant murals depicting the hearty stew painted on walls throughout the area. Uijeongbu is widely recognized as the birthplace of budae jjigae, earning this distinction through its unique post-war history and the creative culinary innovation of its residents.
The city's claim to fame stems from its past as home to US military bases following the Korean War, when resourceful locals began creating what would become budae jjigae by combining leftover sausages and Spam from the American bases with traditional Korean ingredients such as kimchi and gochujang, the signature Korean red chili paste. This fusion of American military rations with Korean flavors gave birth to a dish that would eventually become one of Korea's most popular comfort foods.
Now celebrating its 18th year, the annual festival has grown into a major cultural event that attracts both local residents and tourists from across the country, all gathering to celebrate and promote the dish that has evolved into one of Uijeongbu's most representative cultural assets. One of the festival's highlights was a creative cooking contest centered around budae jjigae, where participating chefs demonstrated the dish's versatility and international appeal. The festival runs from noon to 5 p.m. through Sunday, offering visitors an extended opportunity to experience the best of Uijeongbu's culinary heritage. As an added incentive for festival-goers, all restaurants along Budae Jjigae Street are offering a special discount of 1,000 won ($0.69) per serving throughout the event, making it an affordable way for visitors to sample authentic budae jjigae from multiple establishments and experience the full range of preparations this versatile dish offers.
