A striking new residential complex in Walferdange, Luxembourg, has redefined modern housing design by drawing inspiration from the distinctive roofscape of the historic Helmsange neighborhood. The 14-unit housing ensemble, designed by dagli + atélier d'architecture and completed in 2024, represents a thoughtful contemporary interpretation of local architectural traditions while creating a fresh and dynamic skyline.

The 4,500-square-meter project emerged from an extensive study of the surrounding context, with architects paying particular attention to the varied silhouettes formed by neighboring buildings. Rather than simply replicating historic forms, the design team chose to reinterpret these traditional elements, creating a sequence of staggered volumes that respond organically to their immediate surroundings. This approach reflects the rhythmic contrast of local rooftops while incorporating the fluid movement patterns of human activity.

Architectural designer Turkan Nies Dagli led the project's conceptual development, focusing on how contemporary residential architecture could honor local heritage while meeting modern living requirements. The design process began with close observation of Helmsange's distinctive roofscape, analyzing how traditional buildings create visual rhythm through their varying heights, angles, and proportions. This analysis informed the creation of architectural gestures that reflect the organic rhythm of the street while offering residents a connection to their historic surroundings.

The complex features a sophisticated material palette that emphasizes both durability and aesthetic appeal. High-quality manufacturers provided key components, including JUNG electrical systems, Grohe plumbing fixtures, Clou bathroom fittings, Euval construction materials, and Schüco window and facade systems. These carefully selected materials contribute to the project's contemporary appearance while ensuring long-term performance and energy efficiency.

Construction supervision was handled by Ben Blaschette, who ensured that the architectural vision translated effectively into built reality. The project's execution required careful coordination between multiple trades and suppliers to achieve the complex's distinctive staggered profile. Each of the 14 housing units was designed to maximize natural light and ventilation while providing residents with private outdoor spaces and views of the surrounding landscape.
