RM contributes 100 million won towards the preservation of a historic hwarot and Korean cultural heritage

RM, a prominent member and leader of the globally acclaimed K-pop group BTS, has made a substantial donation of 100 million won ($75,000) to restore a traditional Korean bridal costume known as "hwarot." This generous contribution is part of RM's ongoing efforts to support the preservation of Korean cultural artifacts.

Previously, in the years 2021-22, RM had donated a total of 200 million won to the state-run Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation, with half of this contribution specifically allocated for the restoration of the embroidered bridal costume. The hwarot, once worn by royal women during the 1392-1910 Joseon Kingdom, is currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and has been a focal point of restoration.

Utilizing traditional restoration methods, the hwarot was transferred to Korea in October of the previous year. The preservation initiative, bolstered by RM's support, highlights the collaboration between an individual and a state-run institution in the conservation and utilization of cultural heritage. Currently, the restored hwarot is on display at the National Palace Museum in Seoul's Jongno District, awaiting its eventual return to the U.S.

Believed to date back to the early 20th century, the hwarot holds immense historical and cultural significance, with only approximately 40-50 of these traditional bridal costumes remaining in the world. The National Palace Museum's exhibition showcases nine hwarots, including the one worn by Princess Bokon (1818-1832), the second daughter of Sunjo of Joseon (1790-1834).

RM, 29, is well-known for his affinity towards art. Previously, he contributed to the recording of audio guides for 10 Korean art pieces featured in "The Space Between: The Modern in Korean Art" exhibition at LACMA. His recent donation further underscores his commitment to preserving and promoting Korean cultural heritage.
