A boy is riding a bicycle inside an art gallery. He rides between people and artwork. All eyes of the audience are focused on this boy. However, if you look closely at the movements of his body and the muscles in his face, they are a bit awkward. This is the work called "Charlie,", which is currently one of the works exhibited by Maurizio Cattelan at the Leeum Museum of Art.
한 소년이 미술관 안에서 자전거를 타고 있습니다. 사람들과 작품들을 피해서 잘 달리고 있는데요, 관람객들의 시선은 모두 이 소년에게 집중됩니다. 하지만 몸의 움직임과 얼굴의 근육 움직임을 자세히 보니 조금 부자연스럽습니다. 이 소년은 사람이 아닌 “찰리”라는 작품으로 현재 리움 미술관에서는 마우리치오 카델란의 전시작품 중 하나입니다.

The Leeum Museum of Art is opening this exhibition, which is the largest since the Guggenheim Retrospective in New York in 2011. It has 38 works from the 1990s, when Cattelan first started making art, to the present day.
2011년 뉴욕 구겐하임 회고전 이래 최대규모로 진행되는 이번 전시는 리움미술관에서 진행되며카델란의 미술계 등단 시기인 90년대부터 지금까지 소개 된 작품 38점으로 구성되었습니다.

His works on display are mostly hyper-realistic sculptures and use popular elements familiar to him. The exhibition, titled "WE," makes us think about who we are, how we become and what relationships are like in a broader sense. It is an exhibition where you can think about things like life and death, power, love, and religion.
전시되는 그의 작품들을 보면 극 사실적 조각이 주를 이루며 익숙한 대중적 요소를 이용합니다. "WE" 라는 전시제목으로 진행되는 이 전시는 확장된 의미에서 우리는 누구인가, 어떻게 우리가 되는가, 관계란 무엇인가 라는 질문을 던지게 합니다. 억압, 권위, 사랑, 종교 등 삶과 죽음에 대한 생각을 할 수 있는 전시입니다

On the way to the entrance to Cattelan’s exhibition hall, pigeons are sitting in the museum, watching the visitors. They are part of Cattelan’s work. Everyone is surprised to see homeless people before going into the exhibition hall. This is also artworks that shows that people from all walks of life can enjoy art.
카델란의 전시장에 들어가는 입구로 향하는 길 입니다. 미술관 안에 비둘기들이 앉아서 관람객들을 쳐다보고 있는데요 이들도 작품의 일부 입니다. 미술관 안쪽으로 들어가기 전 고개를 푹 숙인 노숙자들을 보고 모두가 깜짝 놀라는데요, 이 역시 작품 중 하나로 신분의 격차 상관 없이 모두가 미술을 누릴 수 있다는 것을 보여줍니다.

This is a self-portrait of Cadelan wearing the clothes of artist Joseph Beuys who is stuck in a nail and unable to go anywhere. Joseph Beuys is a renowned contemporary artist, at the time. But Cattelan thought that he became an artist easily and that he had many twists and turns as an artist. So he expressed being stuck inside his clothes (frame) and unable to move. 

못에 박혀 오도 가도 못하는 요셉보이스 작가의 옷을 입고 있는 카델란의 자화상입니다. 요셉보이스는 유명했던 현대미술가인데 카델란은 그가 쉽게 예술가가 되고 본인은 예술가로서 우여곡절이 많고 힘들었다고 합니다. 그래서 그의 옷(틀) 안에 같혀 움직이지 못 하는 것을 표현했습니다.

You can also see two police officers standing upside down. This is a message criticizing the government for not doing anything when the twin towers collapsed in the United States.
경찰 두 명이 거꾸로 세워져 있는 모습도 보입니다. 미국 쌍둥이빌딩이 무너졌을 당시 아무것도 하지 못한 정부에 비판을 담은 메세지 입니다.

This is the boy riding the bike you saw earlier. This work is titled “Charlie”. It shows a boy running with his eyes moving back and forth while he smiles. Charlie, who wanders around the audience without paying attention to the eyes of adults, is also a self-portrait of Cadelan, who challenges the established system and power.
앞서 보셨던 자전거를 타는 소년입니다. 작품명은 “찰리”로 미소짓고 있는 소년이 미술관의 고요함을 깨고 눈을 이리저리 움직이며 달리고 있습니다. 어른들의 시선을 신경쓰지 않고 관객들 사이를 돌아다니는 찰리는 기성 체제와 권력에 도전하는 카델란의 자화상이기도 합니다.

The nine marble sculptures “All”, reminiscent of corpses, recall and commemorate recent disasters. It is a piece of work that can show the aftermath of a disaster or the way death is shown in the news. The piece is made of Carrara marble, which is often used for monuments.
시신을 연상케 하는 아홉개의 대리석 조각 “모두”는 최근에 일어난 참사를 소환하고 추모하게 만듭니다. 미디어를 통해 보는 참사의 현장이나 죽음의 재현을 간접적으로 마주할 수 있는 작품입니다. 작품은 기념비에 자주 쓰이는 카라라 대리석으로 만들어졌습니다.

“The Ninth Hour,” which depicts a pope who was struck down by a meteorite, is a work that expresses authority and oppression in a regional context beyond a specific religion.
운석에 맞아 쓰러진 교황을 표현한 “아홉번 째 시간”은 특정 종교를 넘어 지역적 맥락에서 권위와 억압을 표현한 작품입니다.

This work that went all the way through the floor of the Leeum Museum of Art is also getting a lot of attention. This work has been put up in places other than Korea. Depending on where it's put, you might feel like you're trying to steal paintings or like you made a crazy mistake like the main character, who broke into a pawnshop but ended up in the kitchen of an apartment.
리움미술관의 바닥을 뚫게 한 이 작품도 화제가 되고 있는데요, 비정상적인 경로로 전시장에 침입한 인물은 카델란을 많이 닮았습니다. 이 작품은 한국 말고도 여러나라에 설치가 되었었는데요, 설치한 곳에 따라 그림을 훔치려는 듯한 느낌이 들기도 하고 전당포에 침입하려고 구멍을 뚫었지만 웬 아파트 부엌으로 나오게 된 주인공처럼 황당한 실수를 한 것처럼 보이기도 하는 작품입니다.

Mauricio Cattelan is an Italian artist in his 60s. He did not receive formal art education, but after experiencing various occupations, he worked as a furniture designer and finally entered the art world like his life, which has many turning points, he called himself a "intruder in the art world" and has challenged stereotypes by crossing the boundaries of institutions. So, his work often has images that are meant to make people think. But even though his work is thought-provoking, seeing it in person will leave a strong impression.
마우리치오 카텔란은 60대 이탈리아 작가입니다. 그는 정규 미술 교육을 받지 않고 다양한 직군을 경험한 뒤 가구 디자이너로 일하며 비로소 미술계에 몸담게 됬습니다. 변곡점이 많은 그의 인생사처럼, 그는 스스로를 ‘미술계의 침입자’로 정체화하고 제도의 경계를 넘나들며 고정관념에 도전해왔습니다. 그래서 그의 작품은 종종 도발적인 이미지로 해석될 수 있습니다. 하지만 도발적인 만큼 그의 작품을 실제로 본다면 강한 인상을 남길 것 입니다.

The exhibition will be held until July 16th.
전시는 7월 16일까지 진행됩니다.
