SEOUL, South Korea — A former foreign service employee has been fined 1 million won ($749) by the Seoul Central District Court for attempting to sell a bucket hat online that belonged to BTS member Jungkook, according to legal sources. The identity of the employee has been withheld.
The incident occurred in October, when the employee put the bucket hat up for sale on an online second-hand market for 10 million won, claiming that the K-pop star had left it at the foreign ministry building in Seoul while applying for a passport . After the offer sparked controversy, the seller deleted the post and turned himself in to the police.
Prosecutors subsequently sought a 1-million-won fine, and the former employee was summarily indicted. The Seoul Central District Court has now imposed the fine.
The attempted sale of Jungkook's lost hat highlights the continued popularity and cultural influence of BTS, whose global fan base has made them one of the most successful music groups of all time. It also serves as a cautionary tale about the potential legal consequences of attempting to profit from the personal belongings of celebrities.
