IU, the celebrated singer and actor, commemorated her 15th debut anniversary by donating 300 million won ($227,000) to medical and welfare organizations dedicated to assisting vulnerable groups. Her agency, EDAM Entertainment, announced this significant contribution on Monday.
The generous donations were distributed among three institutions: Asan Medical Center, the Korean National Association of Child Welfare, and the Seoul Metropolitan Children's Hospital. IU, affectionately known as "IUaena," combined her stage name with her fan club's name, Uaena, to signify her commitment to making a positive impact.
The funds provided will be directed towards various noble causes, including the treatment of women and children battling cancer, ensuring essential medical procedures for children, and supporting the restoration of children's institutions affected by recent storms.
IU made her debut on September 18, 2008, with a captivating performance of "Lost Child" on the cable network Mnet. Just five days later, she released her first album, marking the beginning of a remarkable career. Throughout her journey, IU has gained recognition not only for her exceptional talent but also for her consistent charitable endeavors.
Earlier this year, IU extended her philanthropic reach by contributing to ChildFund Korea and collaborating with the Yangpyeong County office to provide heating assistance to underprivileged families during the winter season.
In a press release, IU expressed her happiness at being able to contribute to society with the support of her devoted fan base, Uaena. She acknowledged the profound impact her fans have on her, providing her with the energy and inspiration she needs. IU emphasized her desire to share the love she has received and become a catalyst for positive change in others' lives. She concluded by expressing her enduring gratitude and love for her fans, signing off with a heartfelt promise to see them soon.
