The history of the folding screen in Korean culture is quite extensive. This can be traced back to the Three Kingdoms period. Its original purpose was to separate rooms, divide up space or used for important life events. Many paintings from the Joseon period were made in the form of folding screens. In fact, folding screens are a good way to describe the Korean art of the time.

Amore Pacific Museum is holding an exhibition titled “Beyond Folding Screen2” It aims to shed new light on the traditional values ingrained in such screens and to introduce their diverse aesthetics to the public. Visitors can appreciate fifty-one folding screens by dividing those for the commoners and for the royalty.

한국 문화에서 병풍의 역사는 꽤 깁니다. 이는 삼국시대까지 거슬러 올라갈 수 있는데요, 원래의 목적은 방을 분리하거나 공간을 나누거나 중요한 생활 행사에 사용하는 것이었습니다. 조선시대의 많은 그림들은 병풍의 형태로 만들어졌으며 당시 한국 미술을 잘 표현합니다.

아모레퍼시픽 뮤지엄 에서는 병풍에 내재되어 있는 전통적 가치를 새롭게 조명하고 다양한 미학을 대중들에게 알리고자 하는 "조선, 병풍의 나라 2"를 개최합니다. 관람객들은 민간병풍과 궁중병풍을 포함한 총 51점의 다채로운 병풍을 감상할 수 있습니다.

The first exhibition space features folding screens used by general households wishing for long life and good prosperity were people of all classes, from literati to commoners. Ideal life of a literati is eight-panel folding screen shows the stages of a life that was yearned for by Joseon people by depicting the scenes from the ideal life of a civil official. It shows a birthday party, a wedding, and the parade of a student who got first place in the state exam. As you can see, this screen shows typical events in a successful person's life. Paintings of agriculture and sericulture show scenes of how people in Joseon made a living through farming and silk production.

첫 번째 전시실에는 문인부터 서민에 이르기까지 모든 계층의 장수와 번영을 기원하는 일반 가정에서 사용하던 병풍이 전시되어 있습니다. 평생도 병풍에서는 이상적인 삶을 그려내어 조선인들이 동경했던 삶의 한 단면을 보여줍니다. 돌잔치 혼인식, 장원급제 행렬 등, 성공한 사람의 삶에서 일어나는 전형적인 사건을 보여줍니다. 경작도 병풍은 밭 갈기, 누에고치 기르기 등, 조선인들이 농사와 비단 생산으로 생계를 꾸려 나가는 모습을 보여줍니다.
 

In second and third exhibition space features folding screens produced by court painters and used by the royal family are introduced. Royal procession the Ancestral Tombs in Hawseong depicts scenes from an event held by King Jeongjo in 1795 to commemorate the sixtieth birthday of his mother lady Hyekonggung in Hwaseong, where the tomb of his father Crown Prince Sado was located. Imperial Banquet in the Imin Year depicts an imperial banquet during the Korean Empire period. It was made to remember an event for Emperor Gojong's fifty-first birthday and his entry into a “giroso” (club for older officials).

두 번째와 세 번째 전시 공간에서는 궁중 화원들이 제작하고 왕실에서 사용했던 병풍을 소개합니다. 화성원행도 병풍은 는 1795년 정조가 어머니 혜경궁의 회갑을 맞아 아버지 사도세자의 능이 있는 화성에서 행한 행사의 모습을 그린 작품입니다. 임인진연도 병풍에서는 51세가 된 고종이 기로소에 입소하는 의식과 이를 기념하기 위해 베풀어진 궁중연향을 묘사한 그림입니다.

The fourth and fifth exhibition halls offer a glimpse of how painters in the modern era attempted to maintain traditions year pursued novelty in the late nineteenth century. Four Gentlemen and Flowers screen is a gold painting on black silk. The composition combines the Four Gentlemen with auspicious flowers such as peonies, plantains, and daffodils.

네 번 째와 다섯번 째 전시실에서는 19세기 후반 새로움을 추구했던 근대 화가들이 어떻게 전통을 유지하려 했는지 엿볼 수 있습니다. 금니사군자화훼도 병풍은 검은 비단 위에 금분과 아교를 섞어 만들었습니다. 사신과 꽃을 검은 비단에 금색으로 그려냈습다. 모란, 질경이, 수선화와 같은 상서로운 꽃과 함께 사군자를 조합해 그려냈습니다.

In last exhibition hall, visitors can see Leopard Skins screen folds called “Hopido”. Since tiger or leopard skins were expensive and luxurious items and considered to show the dignity, they are favored as subjects for decorative paintings or as paintings for repelling evil spirits.

마지막 전시실에서는 표범 가죽을 그려낸 호피도 병풍을 볼 수 있습니다. 호피도와 같은 그림은 표범가죽 무늬를 특징으로 합니다. 표범가죽은 예로부터 비싸고 고급스러운 물건으로 위엄을 나타냅니다. 때문에 장식화나 액막이 그림의 소재로 애용되었습니다.

Outside of the exhibition space, visitors can see unique “Eight Digital Folding Screen III” made by Lee Lee-Nam media artist. He uses a computer mouse like a paint brush. He turns paintings into "moving pictures" by adding sounds and other things to show the passing of time or by switching the scenes.

전시실 밖에는 미디어 아티스트 이이남의 디지털8폭병풍III을 볼 수 있는데요, 컴퓨터 마우스를 페인트 브러시처럼 사용해 그려낸 작품입니다. 그는 시간의 흐름을 보여주기 위해 소리와 다른 요소들을 추가하거나 장면을 전환함으로써 “움직이는 그림”으로 만들었습니다,

These pieces show how folding screens from the Joseon era had a refined sense of beauty and a modern outlook. Through this wide range of folding screens, the "Beyond the Folding Screen 2" exhibition will give people a chance to appreciate the beautiful and sophisticated style of traditional Korean art.
