Masterpiece Exhibition "Eyes on Us" Showcases Rembrandt's Self-Portrait at the Age of 63

The National Gallery London is currently hosting the highly anticipated Masterpiece Exhibition titled "Eyes on Us," featuring the renowned Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn's captivating self-portrait. Created in 1669, this remarkable oil on canvas painting measures 86 x 70.5 cm and holds the National Gallery's acquisition number NG 221. The artwork was purchased by the gallery in 1851, securing its place in the esteemed collection.

Among his extensive body of work, self-portraits held a special significance, with approximately 80 of them surviving to this day. This particular self-portrait was one of three he completed before his passing.

During the early stages of his career, Rembrandt used self-portraits as a means of experimenting with expressions, postures, and light effects. They allowed him to delve into different artistic techniques and convey his own image. Not only did these self-portraits serve as a personal exploration, but they also showcased Rembrandt's skill as a successful painter.

The National Gallery London's collection also includes another notable self-portrait by Rembrandt, known as "Self-Portrait at the Age of 34." This painting further exemplifies the artist's mastery and provides an insightful glimpse into his evolving style.
