Saint John the Baptist, one of Leonardo DA Vinci's most famous paintings, is about to move from the Musée du Louvre in Paris to The Louvre Abu Dhabi to commemorate the museum's fifth anniversary next month. The painting from the 16th century will be on loan to the Abu Dhabi Museum for two years. The show will start on November 8, which is four days before the museum's anniversary.
The oil on wood painting from the 16th century is one of the most popular displays at The Louvre in Paris. It is notable for its depiction of a youthful Saint John, who had previously been portrayed as a skeletal figure prior to Leonardo's painting. The smoky canvas with soft highlights on the figure's outstretched arm is a great example of Leonardo's technique. It shows that he was a master of chiaroscuro.
